Karnak Montu Temple EG0214009jhp Temple Montu precinct propylon Karnak Egypt gate Amenhotep Ptolemy which is located inside the north enclosure wall of the Karnak Complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. Accessed near the delightful small Temple pf Ptah on the North Enclosure of Karnak and as very seldom frequented so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast and it was the only time I have been offered the chance to see this site and was not allowed to explore it. The Ptolemlaic Propylon is visible behind the palm tree on the left and the older main temple of Amenhotep 11 is on the right. Karnak Pylon Restoration EG075041jhp Karnak Temple Ninth Pylon crane restoration rebuilding front block hieroglyphics located on the transverse axis south from the main central area in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is of the Ninth Pylon with its southern face showing the slow progress of restoration after the infill from many Atenist temples has been removed, much of which lies around the is area of Karnak waiting for an eventual new home. Beyond the base of the crane is the Eighth Pylon originally built by Hatshepsut while the Ninth and Tenth were both attributed to Horemheb. This view is of the Ninth Pylon with its southern face showing progress of restoration after the infill from many Atenist temples has been removed, much of which lies around the is area of Karnak waiting for an eventual new home. While the building of the Ninth and Tenth pylons were both attributed to Horemheb, there is clear evidence that Ramses 11 took over the decoration as it is visible on the restored south face with his cartouches and his outline obviously carved over an underlying figure that has partially been erased. Karnak Amenhotep 11 Temple EG075038jhp Karnak Temple Sed festival Amenhotep 11 columns fourth court pylons located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the ninth and tenth pylons on the east wall of the fourth court in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is looking over the fourth court from the around the eighth to tenth pylons largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. The Jubilee Temple of Amenhotep possibly for the Sed festival has been recently excavated and partially restored and is thought to have been physically moved, stone by stone, from near the eighth pylon by Horemheb when the ninth pylon was added. Although the original temple is attributed to Amenhotep 11 it was later dammaged by the Atenists and then repaired by Sety 1. The entrance into Karnak is between the two rows of sphinxes but leaving the site you come round the back of the nearest row to the main coachpark. The Karnak complex is locaqtedd near the Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view of the pylon is from within the central enclosure obscured by this stand opf palm trees but one of two standing, headless statues, probably of Horemheb, is visible on the left. the state of the pylon is in very poor repair, many of the blocks are infill reused from other older buildings and once these are identified and removed, reconstruction will start on this pylon and gate. Luxor Karnak Pylon EG074834JHP Karnak Temple Egypt Entrance Pylon Avenue Crio-sphinx Rams Oleander is located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. In this photo are a row of ram-headed sphinxes, known as crio-sphinxes, as they take the form of ram with a lion's body straddling a small form of the pharaoh here, Ramses 11 in the form of Osiris, in the avenue from the old harbour entry to the temple with the first pylon in the background. The sphinxes were probably originally constructed by Amenhotep 11 or Horemheb but their identity replaced by Ramses 11 and even later again changed by Pinedjem 1, an evolution possibly spanning some 300 years. Luxor Cachette Statues EG9620918JHP Egypt Egyptian Museum Luxor Cachette Horemheb Atum Seated Statues Photo were photographed inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. This photo was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases and this was a very difficult one to take becuase of the huge differences in light levels from the floor lighting to the ceiling and regettably was not taken in RAW file which would have offered more control in post production.
