Although we travelled First Class and the seats were undoubtately some of the most comfortable I had had on a train the toilets were probably the worst I have ever experienced anywhere and given the importance of tourism to Egypt and the huge pool of labour available this was an unacceptable lack of standards. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. The bridge was a concrete construction around the 1920’s and although showing a few areas of weathering is in remarkably good condition and the design, partly influenced by wishes of the people of Kemnay during its design and construction, remains complimentary to the area. One of those design features requested were the recesses so walkers could stand safely while enjoying the views of the River.
