Aswan Nubian Museum Bowls EG052937JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum bowls with hunting scenes, wild animals and hunters from the 6th Dysnasty and found at Qubbet el Hawa on display in this modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Faience Bowl EG012620JHP Egypt Cairo Museum Exhibit pottery faience bowl painted patterns in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 2001 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Kom Ombo EG204330jhp Kom Ombo museum blocks Egypt hieroglyphics many symbols sharp carvings of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols. Photos of the recently opened Temple of Merneptah site on West Bank at Luxor with coloured reliefs, open air museum exhibits and interior carvings and paintings.
Merneptah Painted Relief EG051891JHP Temple Merneptah Covered Museum Hieroglyphs Owl Anubis Cobra Road Shrubs for an Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and was recently opened not long before these photos were taken in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Abu Ghurab Alabaster Bowl EG02AA11jhp Egypt Abu Ghurob Sun Temple Niuserre alabaster bowl draining hole isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Cairn O Mount Heather fgh2190jhp Cairn O’Mount Aberdeenshire heather hills rocky forest plantations summer Scottish estate taken from the roadside on this busy and popular road from Banchory on Royal Deeside near the summit of the Cairn O’Mount hill before descending past the Clatterin Brig to Fettercairn, the Mearns and main route south to Dundee and Perth. Clachnaben is the distinctive hill with its prominent tor outcrop of rock is visible from much of lower Deeside and overlooking the road winding through the larch forest of Glen Dye Estate before reaching the single track Spital Bridge the bane of many a lorry and coach drivers life. The photograph shows young new plantations to north which caused much controversy at the time of planting becuase of the possible destruction of the habitat of wildlife especially hen harriers. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl. From the Linn it is a slightly longer drive taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge and starting point for walks to Beinn A’Bhuird.
