This photo was taken inside the ambulatory a walled walkway surrounding the temple and which is covered in many beautiful and detailed carvings in sunk relief and although some have been damaged by later Christian zealots the overall quality of this workmanship is awesome. Edfu is one of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Hatshepsut Temple decorations are still colourful and unlike most are accessible for photographing and lit by natural light. In this photograph from the lower terrace shows the classic star sky ceiling and the God Horus in front of a huge offering feast. Kom Ombo InfR EG982435jhp Kom Ombo Columns carving Temple Egyptian Infra Red B&W ghostly pharoah effect for this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Karnak InfR EG983731jhp Karnak Temple Egypt pharoah Amun carving B&W infra red ghostly near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photograph is looking back into the main area of the temple from the central court area, now a large open space in front of unusual Festival Hall of Thutmose 111. The figure is standing looking into the inner sanctum, the Granite Sanctuary of Philip Arrhidaeus who ruled briefly after the death of Alexander the Great. The obelisk is that of Hatshepsut while the smaller one on the left is that of Thutmosis 1. The distant view goes beyond the Processional Way of the Hypostyle hall, through the western Pylon, over the River Nile to the distant west bank Theban hills. In the foreground are the truncated columns of an area which was one of the oldest areas of Karnak. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. This colourful pillar is one of two erected by Thutmosis 111 in front of the barque sanctuary in the Great Temple of Amun painted and carved with the heraldic plants representing the lily or lotus flower of Upper Egypt and the papyrus of Lower. He also who made considerable contributions to the construction of the Karnak complex with pylons, obelisks, one of which still stands, and a Festival Hall. This particular photograph was taken in 1998 as part of a Stars and Signs cruise and we were able to access the temple at sunrise before it opened to the main package tour traffic. This allowed photos to be taken in beautiful golden early morning light which was particularly useful in highlighting some of the rich wall reliefs. Ramose Tomb Reliefs EG562JHP Ramose Tomb Relief Luxor Tombs Nobles Interior Wall Carving Natural Light, one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor, this one relief of the Pharoah with Goddess Maat in attendance. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days.
