 Union Terrace Gardens Theatre August summer lawn picnics flowers Aberdeen City located in the centre of the Aberdeen and viewed from the iconic Union Terrace Gardens with the famous Bon Accord floral coat-of arms on the face of the bank in the Gardens beneath the background terraces offers unique public space landscaped on a natural gorge.

The buildings in this photograph are known affectionately as “ Education, Salvation and Damnation” three classical Aberdeen silver granite buildings facing Rosemount Viaduct off a grand backdrop – the City Library, St Mark’s domed Church and HM Theatre now of course with its very modern addition of box office and restaurant and the latter two are visible.

 Aberdeen City Duthie Park Crocuses Scottish spring picnic flowers pond water colours sign that winter is on its way out and the crocuses are the first of colourful displays in the largest of the central municipal parks in Aberdeen bordering the River Dee towards the southern aspect of the city. The park is about to complete a major facelift bringing it back to the original Victorian layout.

The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. This building is situated about 16 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. Any of my photographs are for scenic/tourist use only and cannot be used for product endorsement without the explicit permission of the NTS. At the western end of the public road is a small church where the road then enters a shooting estate but has a public track to The Fungle, eventually Birsemore and Aboyne or heading westwards to pick up the Firmounth heading either for Mount Keen or Tarfside or swinging north for Glen Tanar.. Not long after leaving the public road heading for the Fungle it is possible to see Birse Castle on your right.

 H Tree branch Finzean road Feughside interesting Deeside pine tree natural on the Finzean to Forest Birse road with its wide coverage of silver birch trees a popular drive and picnic area to the westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. Bearing right from Finzean this road crosses to Aboyne and Deeside via Ballogie. This tree I remember as a child over 50 years ago as being a Henderson my father showed it to the family on our car trips to picnics in the Forest of Birse and of course explained it was nature recognising our surname. Not sure if it was a deliberate act or just natural piece of luck and it is shame to see the right hand tree trunk appears to be dying.

It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. Scolty Hill with its memorial tower is a distinctive landscape pointer to the town with easily accessible forest walks and a not too strenuous walk to its summits with pleasing views of much of Royal Deeside as well as interesting views to the north and south.
