Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

This last photo was taken at 02.28.39hrsUT for 23secs, showing strong red oxygen background light looking southwards marked by Orion in its winter position to the north and a very rare position in which to see Aurora displays at the end of this digital sequence and when cloud cover stopped further viewing. The cf128 digital sequence, starting at 01.39.28 of the continuing activity continued well into the morning of the 30th October when clouds cleared again, perseverance pays, allowing a third major Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 02.28.39 which in the course of displays I have seen was unusual to continue as long as this. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 20.15hrs UT on the evening of the 29th towards the west visible through gaps in the extensive cloud cover and further slide film preceded this digital sequence from 00.56 to 01.04 hrs UT on scanned slides AB036series. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. Deeside Aurora au95919jhp Aurora display lights green rays north autumn Plough 1995 Scotland Aberdeenshire Deeside taken on the morning of the 19th October, 1995 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking to north with the Plough Constellation in its classis autumnal position. This photo was taken at 00.30hrsUT with several weak rays. The activity continued until the early hours of the morning of the 19th, finishing around 01.00hrs UT and was the last Aurora display recorded by me until April 1996 when I was photographing Comet Hyakutake. This photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP processed for a 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 28mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. The very faint display started just after 21.40hrs BST with a few occasional beams but extensive cloud interference until 23.35. This photo was taken at 21.52hrs with suggestion of strong ray on the left amonsgt the clouds on the low horizon but nice position of the Plough like a question mark on its side and clearly fulfilling the Big Dipper description more common in the USA and a useful autumn marker for UK Aurora displays. The photo was scanned from a 35mm colour slide film, Fuji RSP 11 rated at 1600asa rating using a Nikon FM2, 24mm f2.8 lens wide open at around 20 seconds. Taking a ferry over and paying for a museum and island visit is straight forward. This photo was taken in 2000 when restoration and excavation was ongoing and is record of progress at that time. It is also interesting to visit the famous Nilometer which was used for recording the start of the annual flooding of the Nile or inundation. The Nilometer is situated directly across from the equally famous Old Nile Cataract Hotel, written about in Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and which featured in the film of the same name. The island would have had strategic importance given its size and predominant position in the centre of the river. There are the remains of several Temples to various Gods associated with the Island, the most notable being Khnum, the ram-headed provincial God of the region, Lord of the Cataract and Hapy, the Nile God. Khnum’s consorts were Satet/Satis and Anuket. Pre-historic remains and carvings have been found and occupation of the Island spanned almost the whole history to Egypt including a gateway showing Alexander 11 and Greco-Roman Necropolis of the Sacred Rams. Considerable occupation of the Island by high officials is evidenced by the spread of houses and shown in some of these photos. There is also evidence of a Jewish settlement from Aramaic papyri finds. A small but interesting Museum exhibits finds from all the periods of occupation and is well worth a visit. No photography was allowed. There is also a garden museum with statues of Middle Kingdom local nomarchs. As several of the photos show is partially restored Temple of Satet with some painted relief blocks in place and the areas not found left a drawings showing figures in position. Taking a ferry over and paying for a museum and island visit is straight forward. This photo was taken in 2000 when restoration and excavation was ongoing and is record of progress at that time. It is also interesting to visit the famous Nilometer which was used for recording the start of the annual flooding of the Nile or inundation. The Nilometer is situated directly across from the equally famous Old Nile Cataract Hotel, written about in Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and which featured in the film of the same name. The island would have had strategic importance given its size and predominant position in the centre of the river. There are the remains of several Temples to various Gods associated with the Island, the most notable being Khnum, the ram-headed provincial God of the region, Lord of the Cataract and Hapy, the Nile God. Khnum’s consorts were Satet/Satis and Anuket. Pre-historic remains and carvings have been found and occupation of the Island spanned almost the whole history to Egypt including a gateway showing Alexander 11 and Greco-Roman Necropolis of the Sacred Rams. Considerable occupation of the Island by high officials is evidenced by the spread of houses and shown in some of these photos. There is also evidence of a Jewish settlement from Aramaic papyri finds. A small but interesting Museum exhibits finds from all the periods of occupation and is well worth a visit. No photography was allowed. There is also a garden museum with statues of Middle Kingdom local nomarchs. As several of the photos show is partially restored Temple of Satet with some painted relief blocks in place and the areas not found left a drawings showing figures in position. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Saqqara Carving EG051145jhp Saqqara Unas deep cut hieroglyphs carving ancient Egyptian netcher flax that can be seen in small chapels near the restored causeway from the Pyramid of Unas near the Step Pyramid and which slopes down to the Valley Temple first seen as visitors arrive at this major complex near Memphis. Recent archaeological work has discovered tombs underneath the causeway such as that of the Two Brothers while many other undiscovered or partially excavated ones lie alongside the causeway as do boat pits. This view is from a another community project to the west of the town and adjacent to the new bypass which in 2015 is in the middle stages of completion but should once it is finished offer panoramic views across the flat plain of the River Urie towards Bennachie and Garioch. One might however question the bad planning decision to allow a single wind turbine to be located in such a prominent position impacting on this iconic Aberdeenshire hilline. Corsedardar Finzean 198331jhp Feughside Corsedardar hill Aberdeernshire Dardanus Scots King broken marker burial is on a popular drive between Finzean and Aboyne following the B976 westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. The broken stone partly repaired with iron bands and cement after workmen broke it is supposed to stand in its original position and across from the modern War Memorial; nearby is a Millennium standing stone. The broken stone is claimed to have marked the place nearby where an early Scottish Pictish King Dardanus was killed circa AD75, according to Hector Boece’s History of the Scots 1527, because of his cruelty and universal dislike. This whole legend is beyond determining as fact. Slightly south west downhill of this and in the forest is a Long Cairn possibly dating to c.4000BC. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. Picardy Pictish Stone VQ9132JHP Picardy Pictish Symbol Stone Incised Carved Ancient Scottish Pillar Insch Aberdeenshire dates from the 6/7th century AD and stands in a field off minor road to Largie near Insch in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland. A rough whinstone pillar with three finely incised prehistoric Pictish symbols of double disc and Z-rod, coiled serpent and simple mirror. It is apparently in its original position; near a burial and in view of the nearby hill fort of Dunnideer. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation. This view is from the layby above Cockbridge before the start of the main climb over the Lecht. The summit of Lochnagar is just visible through the cleft in the hills directly above the Castle. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.
