Taken on 9th November 2004 at 20.13hrsUT, a continuing active period from the previous night these are located on Royal Deeside some 20 miles west of Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland. Abu Simbel Statues EG051398JHP Abu Simbel Great Temple Ramses head face beards carved stone from two of the four huge rock carved statues of Ramses 11, these are the right hand ones facing the temple, at what was once a River Nile site but now reconstructed in a mammoth UNESCO rescue project in the 1960’s and housed in an artificial hill high enough to save it from the total flooding with the creation of Lake Nasser. Hatshepsut Cliff Tombs EG020104jhp Hatshepsut Temple Luxor Egypt Approach cliff tombs face paths rocky was opened again in 2002 and makes the visit to this magnificent temple almost complete except that entrance into the burial chamber itself is restricted. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. As you walk into the temple you pass these cliff on the righthand side dotted with cliff tombs and criss crossed with dankey tracks and paths now many used by the security forces watching over this infamous site after the 1997 massacre. Karnak temple Ptah EG0214006jhp Temple Ptah Sanctuary Centre columns Karnak Egyptian decorated Thutmosis entrance which is located inside the north enclosure wall of the Karnak Complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a delightful small temple and very seldom frequented so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are broken granite statues of Ptah, which is byond the altar stone and through the door in front and Sekhmet which is in the righthand sanctuary. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. Karnak Central Court EG074969jhp Karnak Temple Luxor Egyptian Obelisks Sanctuary central court Philip Arrhidaeus near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photograph is looking back into the main area of the temple from the central court area, now a large open space in front of unusual Festival Hall of Thutmose 111. The Granite Sanctuary of Philip Arrhidaeus who ruled briefly after the death of Alexander the Great is the dark door beneath the righthand obelisk is that of Hatshepsut while the smaller one on the left is that of Thutmosis 1. Alexandria Tomb Relief eg9613735jhp Egypt Alexandria Tigran painted wall offering adjacent niche Kom es-Shogafa catacombs Mediterranean is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is called Kom es-Shogafa, also spelt es-Shoquafa, al-Shawqaiah a necropolis of catacombs and ongoing archaeology. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952 and this painting is in the righthand niche next to the more famous mummy on bed scene which faces the entrance. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. River Don Keig qax2684jhp River Don Scotland Castle Forbes summer road bridge view Donside Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland looking downstream where the river passes below Castle Forbes which can be seen up on top of the hill to the lefthand side or upstream westwards in the general direction of Keig and towards Strathdon and the Bridge of Alford. Although this is the summer of the long summer heat and sunshine the North East of Scotland was lucky to get some rain, unlike England, but the river is low and there are signs of river algae and the riverside reeds seem to have grown more. The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road.
