It was reconstructed in a mammoth UNESCO rescue project in the 1960’s and is now housed in an artificial hill visible in the disance and high enough to save it from the total flooding with the creation of Lake Nasser and situated on its shores. The sandstone temple to Amun-Re and Re-Harakhte was built by Thutmosis 111, Amenhotep 11 and Tuthmosis 1V. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one is located on Rhakote Hill one of the earliest sites in the City with some Roman ruins and archaeology. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
Montrose Station Arrival qax5688jhp Montrose rail station Scottish platform arrival HST125 LNER diesel locomotive northbound Glasgow a major town south of Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland which has a developed harbour with oil and offshore renewals support facilities. The harbour has a long history of supporting trade across the North Sea with my own forebears working in the wood shipping trade in the 1800’s. A WW2 airfield of note with contemporary museum, beautiful beach, strong academic history, golf course and many other attractions on offer. The basin at Montrose, a tidal inland lake is rich with bird life especially as a roosting area for geese in the winter months. This view is from the railway station on the main east coast line from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and further south to London.
