Through the work of the SCA the old houses of this area are being demolished and the modern occupants are be rehoused on new houses. After the removal of most of the houses an extensive exploration and survey of the area amongst the Tombs of the Nobles will be undertaken to identify any unidentified tombs while the various entrances to the existing tombs are being refurbished to make the area more accessible to visitors. Some of the better houses will be retained as part of a UNESCO sponsored museum as part of the history and occupation of the West Bank. Tomb of Ramose EG945515jhp Ancient Egyptian Ramose Tomb grid drawing outlines scale Wall Relief Egypt Luxor one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Qurna Village Changes EG075716JHP Egyptian Modern Clearances Luxor West Bank Old Qurna Village Mudbrick Houses interspersed with the Tombs of the Nobles is undergoing a major modernisation programme with the houses being removed, occupants relocated and the entrances to the various tombs made more accessible. Obviously a programme without some pain and opposition especially from locals who have lived in the area and over the tombs for generations but part of the necessary management and control of these irreplaceable ancient sites and the artefacts contained therein. The amphitheatre could accommodate 800 seated on 13 rows of grey and white marble seats and once had a domed roof, now long gone except for a few columns that once supported it. Nearby are the remains of a Roman bathhouse and nearby piscina which when I was there were still being excavated. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Tell Basta Temple Overview EG077126JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple panorama overview photograph ancient Egyptian Delta site is a large complex near the town of Zagazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Bent Pyramid Dashur eg9612914jhp Egypt Egyptian Dahshur Bent Pyramid subsidiary small south side rubble desert is a famous and very distinct shape with a reduced slope created mid way up, possibly because of the need to complete the construction earlier than expected or its was structurally unsound. It is the most complete pyramid with most of its Tura limestone cladding intact, although some corners and near the top have been plundered but offer a good indicator of how the Giza pyramids would have looked when completed. Near the pyramid on its south side is a subsidiary one, badly degraded, which was found to have not been used and is felt to be too small for the King’s Queen Hetepheres. When I visited the site in 1995, the same year the military allowed tourist visits, the north entrance, there are two, was reached by climbing up the outside of the structure assisted by the helpful guide but I was unable to reach the burial chamber as I did not trust the rope ladder available. Nearby are several other pyramids of which the North or Red Pyramid also of Sneferu [Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty c2613-2494BC] is the older, largest and most intact. The others of much poorer quality are from the Middle Kingdom 12th Dynasty some 600 years later. Balnacraig-Viaduct-Torphins-6158jhp-8April89 Balnacraig Viaduct 1087 Deeside Railway Line Torphins Lumphanan Aberdeenshire Scotland demolished in 1989 by British Rail on safety grounds and was the last of old relics of the Deeside Line that ran between Aberdeen and Ballater. It was built in 1857-9 by engineer John Willet on the Aboyne Extension from Banchory and was later part of the Ballater branch line, the Royal Deeside Line of the Great North Scotland Railway. Known also as the Sundayswells, Torphins and Lumphanan Viaducts it crossed the Beltie Burn at the Tornaveen junction off the A980 and remnants of the railway line embankments can still be seen. National Grid reference is 60690332. This photo was taken 8th April 1989. Structural details are noted in the keywords. An attempt was made to save the viaduct but sufficient funds could not be raised to maintain it and it was eventually demolished in June of 1989. Many of these photos were taken while I covered the story for the local newspaper the Deeside Piper and are taken from 35mm and 645 transparency film of varying quality so the quality is not always of the best.
