Images in this gallery relate to Aswan in southern Egypt covering the city, the River Nile and related sites except for more important places such as Philae, The Nubian Museum and Seheil Island Rock carvings.

Elephantine Island Aswan Egyptian script Satet Senusret temple hieroglyphs insert visited during a separate excursion and not usually included in standard Nile package tours. Taking a ferry over and paying for a museum and island visit is straight forward. This photo was taken in 2000 when restoration and excavation was ongoing and is record of progress at that time. It is also interesting to visit the famous Nilometer which was used for recording the start of the annual flooding of the Nile or inundation. The Nilometer is situated directly across from the equally famous Old Nile Cataract Hotel, written about in Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and which featured in the film of the same name. The island would have had strategic importance given its size and predominant position in the centre of the river.

There are the remains of several Temples to various Gods associated with the Island, the most notable being Khnum, the ram-headed provincial God of the region, Lord of the Cataract and Hapy, the Nile God. Khnum’s consorts were Satet/Satis and Anuket. Pre-historic remains and carvings have been found and occupation of the Island spanned almost the whole history to Egypt including a gateway showing Alexander 11 and Greco-Roman Necropolis of the Sacred Rams. Considerable occupation of the Island by high officials is evidenced by the spread of houses and shown in some of these photos. There is also evidence of a Jewish settlement from Aramaic papyri finds. A small but interesting Museum exhibits finds from all the periods of occupation and is well worth a visit. No photography was allowed. There is also a garden museum with statues of Middle Kingdom local nomarchs.

As several of the photos show is partially restored Temple of Satet with some painted relief blocks in place and the areas not found left a drawings showing figures in position. There was evidence of considerable reusing of older buildings particularly by the ruler Nectanebo 11, see also his naos, and later Alexander and two temples attributed to Amenhotep 111 and Tuthmosis 111 that existed at the time of the French expedition in 1800 where subsequently destroyed during civil unrest.

Egypt Cairo Kan al-Kalili souk street old Arabic script carved historic part of this busy and often important site seeing stop-off for tourists to Egypt and offered as part of City Tour where many bargains can be picked up as part of that exotic shopping experience in an Arabic Bazaar. Bargaining is also part of the fun and is expected throughout so a new and often daunting experience for the traditional conservative British visitor. Better value can probably be obtained in Aswan or Luxor and certainly for those doing a Nile Cruise large, weighty or fragile items are best left to the last minute.

Iymery Tomb wall reliefs coloured graffiti Greek painted desceration Egypt Western cemetery mastaba carvings painted wall reliefs left in this colourful mortuary chapel situated in the Western cemetery between the Great Pyramid and that of Khafre and open to the public and a welcome diversion from the crowds that surround the nearby Pyramid of Khufu. These photographs are a mixture of natural light time-exposures and some using the rare opportunity to light with flash, given the go-ahead by the custodian. They were taken in JPEG’s whereas today I would always use RAW files and having the advantage of a tripod I would always use natural or even mixed light where possible thus avoiding flash hot spots; flash incidentally does not cause damage to the paintings despite many such claims and restrictions.

Heliopolis Ancient Egyptian German Plaque Obelisk Pharaoh Senwosret north of Cairo is the oldest standing obelisk in Egypt at the site of the temple of Re-Atum although little is left of this once important sun cult centre and dating from around 1970BC at the beginning of the 12th Dynasty. Not visited usually as part of most tour packages it is an interesting visit enroute for other interesting Delta sites such as Tel Basta and Tanis.

Saqqara Ancient Egyptian mastaba Khenu Unas cartouche hieroglyphics carvings clear is located by the causeway and near Pyramid of Unas on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and associated with what was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC. There are several other mastabas near the causeway and behind this small one is a large one dedicated to the Queen’s of Unas Khenut and Nebet. Khenu was the son of Nefer, the Inspector of artisans and singers. I could find little information about Khenu and in several reference books/guide books his mastaba is not mentioned. I understand he had two sons called Ihy and Simoenas, one of which appears in the carvings and his mastaba has an excellent example of a false door. There are several cartouches for the King Unas indicating that Khenu and his father served during this period.

The monument was erected in 1951 by the Deeside Field Club to commemorate the Battle of Corrichie
of 1562 between the forces of Mary Queen of Scots lead by the Earl of Moray who beat those led by the Gordon’s of Huntly, in several battles between the Reformation and a possible Catholic resurgence.
Inscribed on the stone in Gaelic are “Cuimhnichibh La Coire Fraoichidh” translated as Remember the Day of Corrichie. Although Queen Mary is claimed to have sat and watched the battle she was in fact in Aberdeen and both the ‘Queens Chair’, a granite outcrop on Berry Hill and Queen Mary’s well are probably fictional creations.
