Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.

Dendara Temple Sacred Lake steps inside ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic palm trees photo is located north of Luxor and survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of the sacred lake steps which take one into a deep walled catchment area now dry but filled with palm trees. It would have been used for rituals conducted during the Feast of Osiris.

Karnak Temple Sed festival Amenhotep 11 columns fourth court pylons located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the ninth and tenth pylons on the east wall of the fourth court in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is looking over the fourth court from the around the eighth to tenth pylons largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. The Jubilee Temple of Amenhotep possibly for the Sed festival has been recently excavated and partially restored and is thought to have been physically moved, stone by stone, from near the eighth pylon by Horemheb when the ninth pylon was added. Although the original temple is attributed to Amenhotep 11 it was later dammaged by the Atenists and then repaired by Sety 1.

Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including this one of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel of whom little is recorded, who ruled around 1550-24BC and although his mummy was found in the 1881 royal mummy cache but this beautiful small chapel is one delightful reminder of his 25 year reign. There is another alabaster chapel from the reign of Thutmosis 1V, the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour.

This particular exhibit the remains of a large red granite statue of the King is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions.

Crathes Castle spring steps topiary Royal Deeside Scottish Kincardineshire National Trust Scotland property building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant.
The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.
