Aurora over Scotland (3 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours

 Scotland Deeside Aurora Borealis active moving ray red winter January 1990 taken on the Harestone Road to the west of Banchory at a small inset into a field by The Neuk farm. I cleared it with the farmer that I could park there and it gave me a clear view to the Hill of Fare to the North of Banchory. Other photos were taken at a corner layby opposite the entrance to the Ley Farm which I tended to use more as it was more convenient and a tree at the entrance gave a very striking foreground. This photo taken on the 25th of January around 01.30hrsUT and is one from early 1990, four nights before the end of the month, displays which proved to be an extremely productive decade for Aurora displays and photography. I took this photo of the Aurora display using the Fuji RSP 11 35mm slide film rated by Fuji at 800asa and exposed around the 20 seconds I later settled on. The movement of the ray along the Arc from right to left is captured as a very broad band becuase of the time exposure. The rays are usually thin about an 1/8th of this band width but move very quickly. red is from the oxygen in the upper atmosphere.

These locations became my usual choices for most of the Aurora displays I photographed when living in Banchory throughout the early 90’s, as easily accessible from Banchory and with a clear light pollution free view to the North which meant that any clear night was spent watching the Northern skies for the tell-tale signs of a possible display, usually proceeded by an area of obvious brightness on the evening before the main display. It also gave easy access to Crathes Castle which featured a couple of times as different foreground to Aurora displays.

 Scottish Aurora Lights Deeside Aberdeenshire thin rays winter January 1990 on 23rd and first of the new decade taken on the Harestone Road to the west of Banchory at a small inset into a field by The Neuk farm. I cleared it with the farmer that I could park there and it gave me a clear view to the Hill of Fare to the North of Banchory. This photo is one of the first of 1990 which proved to be an extremely productive decade for Aurora displays and photography. I took this photo of the Aurora display using the Fuji RSP 11 35mm slide film rated by Fuji at 1600asa and exposed around the 20 seconds I later settled on. As there was moonlight then there is some additional overexposure element along with less saturation in the colours.

The project to photograph an Aurora came after a missed opportunity earlier in the year in March with what became known as the Big Aurora, a full Corona over Deeside. I had got the idea of trying to photograph a display following on from my success in 1986 of capturing Halley’s Comet thanks to the support of the Astronomy Ian Shepherd at the Edinburgh Observatory. I had heard about the Big Aurora but had missed the display buried away in my darkroom processing B&W photos for the local newspaper. Ian suggested I contact John MacNicol, President of the Aberdeen Astronomy Society and he eventually tipped me off about my first display of the 23 September.

The large dark feature to the bottom right is a hay bale. This second selection of three photos were taken after 23.00 as in this case with this arc starting a second period of activity which finished around 23.30UT and this was gthe last photo i took that evening.  Aswan Souk Bazaar shop display galabeas Egyptian belly dancing outfits near the promenade adding colour to the street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so.

 Noctilucent clouds Deeside July Scotland NLC North night sky rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours from latent twilight are visible towards the horizon and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network rather like the mind filaments from Dumbledore's Pensieve in Harry Potter usually of sapphire blue, gossamer white colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present, this display the only one I saw in 2023. This is taken looking magnetic 60-80 degrees over Crooktree to the North and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, on the 18th July. This was taken at 23.42 UT using a D700 Nikon DSLR with a Tokina SD 28-70mm zoom at aperture f5.6, 28mm focal length, ISO 1600 for 1.6sec. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. This is taken looking East of North from Crooktree with Torphins on lower right as the NLC display expanded and more pronounced waves forming and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, best show so far in 2021 on the 27th June. Taken at 23.56 UT using a D700 Nikon DSLR with a Tokina SD, 70mm, f8, ISO 640 for 4 sec. It was a perfect night with little wind and although this was the last of my watching the display continued for some time more. Taken at 23.54 UT using a D700 Nikon DSLR with a Tokina SD, 28mm, f8, ISO 640 for 5 sec. It was a perfect night with little wind and although this was the last of my watching the display continued for some time more.  Partial Solar Annular Eclipse Sun Moon Crescent June cloudy Aberdeenshire Scotland Deeside on the 10th June, 2021 over Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland near Kincardine O’Neil on Royal Deeside. There was a major cloud problem but luckily not all at the crucial moment. This is one of the first photos taken and shows the eclipse underway with the moon moving from the right and was taken at 10.39hrs UT. The maximum effect was about as is seen, with the next substantial partial eclipse being in 2026 and a total one in 2090. The peak of the display was around 10am UT but was obscured by cloud and this view was towards the end of the display when cloud thinned and the ‘bite’ had moved towards the left side of the sun.

This is taken looking magnetic 45 degrees from Crooktree over Torphins and 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, my second show in 2020 in the late evening of the 3rd July into early 4th. Taken at 23.43 UT [after midnight in BST] using a D700 Nikon DSLR with Tokina SD28-70 lens at f5.6, 3.7 second exposure at ISO500. It was a perfect night with no wind and very little normal cloud cover and there was a short lived but interesting patch of bright light towards the bottom of the right quadrant. Partial Solar Eclipse xcv7083jhp 
 Partial Solar Eclipse Sun Moon thin totality maximum Crescent Scotland Deeside on the 20th March, 2015 over Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland near Kincardine O’Neil on Royal Deeside. Some minor cloud problem but luckily not at the crucial moment and far better than forecast.

This is one of the first photos taken and shows the eclipse underway with the moon moving to ist almost maximum totality and was taken at 09.37hrs. The maximum effect was around 95% and was promoted as the first of this century, with the next partial eclipse being in 2026 and a total one in 2090. The peak of the display was around 9.45am and it did get noticeably darker and although there was still bird activity I did hear an owl start calling in the forest.

 Noctilucent clouds NLC Summer night Scotland Deeside Torphins sky blue network rare event usually occurring between latitudes 55 and 65 degrees resembling thin cirrus but most often a bluish silvery colour although orange or reddish colours and are a beautiful and eerie sight, the spidery network of sapphire blue or occasionally red colours from ice crystals catching the last twilight is seen around the time the brightest stars appear and their strength grows around maximum darkness, usually after midnight BST. They happen only a few times a year and need a clear cloudless night best to see them although in this photo the normal clouds are also present. Technical details; Nikon D700 with Tokina SD Zoom 28-70mm @f4 lens with ISO set at 640 and exposure of 2.9secs taken at 00.23.21UT and the start of a display peaking at around 00.10 UT (01.10am BST).

 Butterfly peacocks sun basking dorsal reflectance concrete slab ground Deeside Scottish summer photograph taken as they fly from the buddleia’s for short periods to these spots directly in the sun here they will boost their body temperatures both from the sun and also the heat stored in this case a concrete slabon the ground. Butterflies are cold blooded and require a certain body heat to be able to fly and this is one method they use to keep them mobile and on this day it was clouding over periodically. Numbers this summer of 2018 are marginally down on a decade ago but my maximum daily count by the end of August 2018 on the most sunny days has been well in excess of 50 peacocks, three Red Admirals and an occasional Small Tortoiseshell. I am hoping that my planned planting of another dozen buddleias around the wild garden to add to the 6 established ones will boost numbers. The bees have been very busy all summer and a bumper crop of apples is evidence they did their job in the spring.

 Dragonfly golden ringed hawker cordulgaster boltonii wings eyes buddleia hanging Deeside Scottish summer photograph taken with a macro lenses as it appears to hang attached to the buddleia flowers possibly asleep or resting. It made no movement when I photographed it and when I blew gently on it remained completely still; I thought it had died and was stuck to the buddleia however after I returned a few minutes later it had disappeared. I checked the ground to see if it had fallen but it was no where to be seen. I had seen a large dragonfly flying the day before around the area although I was unable to get close enough to identify it. The main source of natural water is a small stream and there are some stagnant pools in the nearby forest where deep tyre tracks from tree harvesters had operated a few years before.
