This event is the most major scale of display visible for as the display starts to develop and increase in power it passes southwards creating a moving zenith overhead giving the impression of looking underneath a huge crown often with multiple colours. The shape at the zenith from which rays drop to all the horizons in a 360 degree sweep can create weird shapes which are changing rapidly around the central vortex. This level of display is rare in the UK because the power levels need to be huge and are caused mainly by a CME, Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun’s surface with the eruption aimed directly at the Earth. It is unusual for the more common Solar Wind generated displays to reach the UK let along push as far south as the Channel although sometimes they can be combined with a direct CME hit and cause large and colourful events. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. During construction analysis of the mud found on the wood sections suggests it sailed on the River Nile; the sections are tied together and it measures 43 metres long. Ptolemaic Temple Hieroglyphs EG051870JHP Deir el-Medina Temple Colourful Frieze Hieroglyphs Cobra Ankh Stars Painted Reliefs is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. St Cyrus Beach zxc5226jhp St Cyrus Cliffs northwards seats viewpoint Autumn North Sea Aberdeenshire Scotland is on the southern most boundary of Aberdeenshire just north of Montrose and at the estuary of the North Esk river. A SSSI it is a wonderful area for wildlife, has a long sandy beach stretching northwards from the river underneath huge cliffs and easy access ends at an area of huge rocks which delight children at low tide with rock pools full of fascinating marine life. This photo is of the cliff path from the village of St Cyrus nearest the Church with some late autumn colour and is one of two routes down to the beach. The cliffpath was started in 1882 by Mr George Ross, my great-grandfather. St Cyrus Cliffpath VS2566JHP St Cyrus Cliffs Path Flowers Autumn North Sea Mearns Aberdeenshire Scotland is on the southern most boundary of Aberdeenshire just north of Montrose and at the estuary of the North Esk river. A SSSI it is a wonderful area for wildlife, has a long sandy beach stretching northwards from the river underneath huge cliffs and easy access ends at an area of huge rocks which delight children at low tide with rock pools full of fascinating marine life. This photo is of the cliff path from the village of St Cyrus with some late summer colour and is one of two routes down to the beach. Its folded wings showing a rather dull, dark and uninteresting underneath. Numbers of butterflies overall are better this year, 2017, although still down on 20 years ago when 100plus was not unusual. So far this year I have counted over 50 at one time, mainly Peacocks and Red Admirals with a couple of Small Tortoiseshells and one Dark Green Fritillary but some good sunny spells seems to have got them active. One surprise was to find a Golden Ringed Dragonfly hanging from a buddleia early in the morning, no movement of any kind while I photographed it but it had gone 10 mins later when I came out again.
