Egypt > Kom Ombo Temple (3 files)

Pictures in this gallery are of Kom Ombo Temple located by The River Nile North Of Aswan
Kom Ombo EG20434jhp
Kom Ombo Temple River Nile Egypt rare high view upstream vista of this beautiful ruined temple just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. This trip was special for me in that I got special permission to climb up the back of the temple on the hill behind and match a view I had on a Victorian albumen print; the local Police Chief had to be involved and thanks to a good Kuoni Guide he agreed for me to be accompanied by a policemen as security was still a big thing after the 1997 attacks at Luxor. Unfortunately in the excitement I had forgot to adjust my ASA rating for Velvia and took the photos based on 400ASA-the film maws later pushed to 200asa so there is some increase in grain structure, not a feature of Velvia generally. On this visit some cleaning and restoration was being done to the many painted bas reliefs on the columns-hence the scaffolding and the sun umbrella but the bonus was the reliefs looked particularly vibrant. The time of day also meant some of the museum blocks with deep cut carvings were ideal to photograph as the shadows gave greater emphasis to the excellent cut marks of some iconic hieroglyphic symbols.

Obviously a programme without some pain and opposition especially from locals who have lived in the area and over the tombs for generations but part of the necessary management and control of these irreplaceable ancient sites and the artefacts contained therein. The Hotel I understand from the owner is destined to stay - a pleasant stop for refreshment after the heat of walking to several tombs.

Egypt > Philae Temple Aswan (5 files)

Philae Temple EG204814jhp
Philae Temple courtyard empty colonnades Egypt Isis pylon columns vista Aswan island was established late in the history of Egypt being mainly Ptolemaic, eventually closing as a religious site around 550AD and being located on an island had remained remarkably untouched, partly as it was submerged when the Nile flooded after the construction of the first dam. Being relocated onto the Island of Agilkia on the River Nile near Aswan, to save it being flooded permanently after the completion of the High Dam, it is perhaps one of the loveliest and most complete classic Egyptian temples to visit with a peaceful spirituality lacking in many of the land based sites mainly because of being isolated on an island from modern day noise and often being less crowded as less accessible. It also has a very delightful Light and Sound show, partly a walk through to the Sanctuary followed by a sit down session just past the Kiosk of Trajan.

Often the shapes and range and vibrancy of the colours defies descriptions and can only be seen to be believed; my experience is that this phase only lasts for at most 20 minutes so it is often being in the right place at the right time and best photographed using a tripod as the light levels mean longer exposures especially at best quality ISO settings.

Deeside Sunset zxc3705jhp
Deeside Scottish summer vista sunset clouds sun hilline bales colours Kincardine ONeil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges.

Crathes Castle Snowscene 171619jhp
Crathes Castle lawn topiary Scottish winter snow sundial carved face Deeside Aberdeenshire which offers a wonderful vista of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnetts of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant.

The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Entry into the walled garden is at the west side and the main path into the gardens is through the white borders and onto the path down the June Borders to the bottom of the walled garden where there is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border, the summer jewel resplendent with many colourful plants, with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Topiary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden.

This photo was taken in the days of transparency film before digital was even a serious contender for recording these properties for the publishing market. Little has changed since this photo was taken except the distant rhododendrons which used to border the path coming down to the castle. Also it seems with climate change the days of deep snow are far less at the castle and Aberdeenshire generally.

Inchdrewer Castle vbn0503jhp
Inchdrewer Castle Banff Whitehills Tipperty tower house ruin cereal crops summer Scotland Aberdeenshire built in the mid-1500s around 1542 as a traditional L-shaped tower house was destroyed by fire in 1713 on the death of George Ogilvy 3rd Lord of Banff, but rebuilt and a new round tower was added. Tenanted in the early 19th Century but derelict from 1836 and although partially restored to make weather tight has not been occupied since. A Listed in 1972.

Ownership was initially by Currours, sold to Ogilvies of Dunlugas in 1557, later in 1803 Abercromby of Birkenbog inherited it, later sold to Count Mirrees and on his death sold to Olga Roh in 2013, former Russian model who has plans to renovate it as family home. Has been involved in Historic conflicts namely Royalists v Covenanters in 1640 and Jacobite Rebellion in 1746.

Peel of Lumphanan fgh2452jhp
Deeside Lumphanan Peel motte vista overview summer Scotland history Aberdeenshire located to the west of the village of Lumphanan. The village has historical connections with a cairn to the death of Macbeth in the woods nearby in 1057 as well as this 12th Century Peel signifying its strategic importance associated with ancient drove roads and various passes from the flat lands of Deeside northwards into Strathdon and the lands of Northern Aberdeenshire. The original defences are now held to be turf ramparts rather than a palisade and the large outer wall was found to be 18th century agricultural work rather than original barricades creating a moat. On the top of the large flat area is the foundation outline of a rectangular Halton House dating to the 15th century. A small car parking area is available for the visitor and there is a very informative information board provided by Historic Scotland.

Elgin Cathedral Vista Cemetery Tombstones Side View Moray Scotland Sunshine founded in 1224 although a substantial ruin now cared for by Historic Scotland remains one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Scotland. The transepts with their buttressed west towers and parts of the tall choir and nave date from the fire of 1270 but subsequent destruction especially by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390 and later further destruction and neglect after the Reformation means we will never see this building in its true majesty.

Dunnottar Castle S0795JHP
Dunnottar Castle Wide Cliffs Vista Sea Spring Sunny Clouds Aberdeenshire Scotland fortress ruin standing proud on a spectacular headland jutting out into the North Sea south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault; viewed here from the cliffs with Castle Haven Bay to the left and Old Hall Bay to the right and a excellent appreciation of the strategic strength of the headland.
