Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Corona Forming aucf13113jhp Aurora Borealis Scotland green rays shapes weird ghostlike south Deeside Aberdeenshire photos taken on the evening of the 30th at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen looking from the east to the south. This digital photo was taken at 23.20.56hrsUT for 25secs, showing green oxygen rays and shapes above the cottage roof looking southwards and forming weird shapes. The cf131 digital sequence, starting at 22.58.22, shows the continuing activity following on from the very active night of the 29th/30th with another Corona to be viewed through until the last frame at 23.25 which was frustrated by complete cloud cover and rain. Photos were taken with both digital and slide film and the first slide film started at around 21.50hrsUT on the evening of the 30th when the extensive cloud cover cleared. The magnetometer on site showed vigorous activity from 21.30hrs. This digital photo was taken with a Fujifilm Finepix Digital S2Pro camera, at maximum ISO of 1600 using a Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens, giving a fairly undistorted wide angle image, wide open aperture with most exposures manually near the 20 seconds mark which experience suggested was around the best exposure for the low light Aurora displays. These were some of my first digital recordings taken during 2003 when the quality of digital cameras had at last matched 35mm slide film standards and the noise factor was superior to the grain created pushing 400asa slide film to 1600asa. This event is the most major scale of display visible for as the display starts to develop and increase in power it passes southwards creating a moving zenith overhead giving the impression of looking underneath a huge crown often with multiple colours. The shape at the zenith from which rays drop to all the horizons in a 360 degree sweep can create weird shapes which are changing rapidly around the central vortex. This level of display is rare in the UK because the power levels need to be huge and are caused mainly by a CME, Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun’s surface with the eruption aimed directly at the Earth. It is unusual for the more common Solar Wind generated displays to reach the UK let along push as far south as the Channel although sometimes they can be combined with a direct CME hit and cause large and colourful events. Aswan Botanical Gardens EG052782jhp Egypt Aswan Plantation Island Botanical Gardens red flowers bulbous globular often visited on trips in feluccas to the Nubian Villages or Cataracts and the west bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. The Botanical Gardens are a pleasant relaxing visit with walks though tree covered paths, splashes of colourful flowers, wild birds and the occasional cat by places to sit and the usual rest house at the main disembarking area when the visit is completed. Although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. Their shapes, size and often awesome sense of power make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East. The really colourful period seldom lasts long, maybe 15 mins, so it is very much being in the right place at the right time type of photography. Cothiemuir Wood bnm3620jhp Scottish summer Cothiemuir Wood sun backlit oak leaves branch skeleton weird shape walk Keig Donside Aberdeenshire and now the focus for a nearby natural burial site with a spiritual connection going back to Bronze Age ancient Recumbent Stone Circle with altar stone, flankers and some outer monoliths is found deep in the forest off the Keig to Monymusk Road via My Lord’s Throat which runs along the southern side of Bennachie. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs. It is famous as possible inspiration for the Dracula story written by Bram Stoker during one of his holidays to Cruden Bay.
